Sound impacts mood and creates atmosphere by drawing attention to the listener and allowing them to interpret how the sound makes them feel. For example, “spooky sounds” create a dark, somewhat uncomfortable tone. Sound helps express the visual image by defining mood and directing our attention. Sound is emotionally direct, so it is a powerful tool. The sound of the source drives how the listener reacts to the sound. For example, the sound of a door creaking creates suspense.

Audio in storytelling dictates what the listener gets out of the story. Audio allows the scene to become more realistic for the listener. Sound effects in film/video and noir set the tone and help dictate what the listener gets out of the story.
