I’m With You Till the End of the Line- Week 5 Summary

This week was about design… what it is, some tips on how to make it better, and who owns it.

I started out the week by reading Vigenelli’s book of tips, to get some basic ideas for design. I liked looking at the pictures- he makes it all look so easy! Of course, nothing is as easy as it seems, which I learned as I went ahead and started making my own designs. I have experience in design, I guess, but it’s one of those things I don’t really think about. I usually just create stuff without putting too much thought into it. Which, in retrospect, maybe isn’t the greatest idea.

oh well.

I liked that the bulk of this week’s assignments were about creating design work rather than just reading and observing it. I came into the week wanting to see if my approach to design would change at all over the course of the week. I’m not really sure I can see any difference, to be honest. However, I can say that I am much more conscious of how I design things and go about them than before this week. So, here’s hoping that in the future I can practice my design skills in order to make new things that people, and myself, enjoy.

While I liked designing things, I have to admit that reading about copyright was a bore. I totally understand why I had to read and watch these things- and in all honesty the articles and videos were short and concise so it didn’t REALLY take a while to read. It’s just that copyright is one of those things that is contested so often and talked about so frequently that I had a bit of an, “ugh this is going to suck” attitude. But, I pushed through it, and came out the other side a bit more informed about the whole debate. I explain my opinion a bit more in my post, Is Copyright a Right? but for a quick summary, I concluded that using ideas for the expansion of culture in and of itself is not a sin- but when those ideas are used without credit to the original creator for monetary compensation, there’s a problem.

In terms of challenges, I didn’t really have too many this week. It was pretty smooth sailing. I had a bit of trouble identifying some of the design elements for the photo blitz, but other than that I think I did ok.

This week I also learned more about how design is reflected in film. In my post about the movie Double Indemnity, I went ahead and looked at the design of how 1940s city scape were created, and how that influences the movie. I contrasted the living room scene to the grocery store scene, and analyzed how the different components of these scenes affected the story.

Please take a minute or two (or three) to take a look through the posts I’ve created this week! As always, leave me a comment to let me know what you think.

See you next week!
