One of the Design Assignments I completed this week was the Newspaper Design challenge, a three-star assignment that contributed to the six stars dedicated to my noir character, Caterina Loveless.
And boy was it a challenge! Since Writing Week was so long ago, my story development had become kind of stagnant
I had decided to simply access The Googs to see if there were, and of course good ol’ Google did not disappoint! Tons of people had uploaded various newspaper templates in Google Doc format, and I simply used one of those! I thought I was good to go, totally golden, but that was far from the case.
lol, clearly #Vignelli is a huge fan of us
Because like Vignelli said, we Americans have it all wrong when it comes down to our templates for design. Honestly, as funny/slightly offensive as I found his harshness, he wasn’t totally off base. If you look back at the image of my paper as a whole, I had tons of trouble fitting stuff in, and there are those dreaded “rivers” between a fair bit of the type … Not really the best design, but I made do with what I had to work with.
Overall though, I am glad I chose to utilize this assignment for my character. It gives readers more background and specifics of the time and setting of the story and a bit of the specifics of Cat if you reeeaaallyyy look for them. It also introduces some potentially new characters. But most importantly, it helped me better think about what route I want to take with my character and my story as a whole as I develop Cat into a antihero-esque/ potentially villainous femme character and delve further into my research into Superhero-dom.
