Get off the stage!
So I guess design week is where we really get our hands dirty with picture editing programs. This assignment took a lot of playing around on gimp, a lot of googling, a lot of youtube tutorials, and a lot of me getting mad at my computer for not working fast enough.
I started my project by finding the picture of the Lorax that I wanted to use. There were a lot of options, but I thought this one would be funny to superimpose into a more serious setting:
Then, I had to find the scene that he would intrude on. Originally, I was going to put him into a ballet performance, as he appears to be doing a little dance and I thought that would be a funny intrusion. However, I couldn’t find a picture where there was enough room for him to fit. So I decided to look for a stage performance, and I started searching for Shakespeare images. This one popped out to me because I would easily be able to post him downstage.
So then I went to cut out the Lorax in gimp. It wasn’t hard to select just him because gimp is pretty good at selecting solid colors. I was able to use the fuzzy select tool to select all the white. Then I had to figure out how to get rid of the white. This was difficult. So I turned to my trusty friend google. However, what I learned is that there’s a lot of tutorials and how-tos on the web, but not many are actually helpful. Thankfully, I came across this video which really simply and clearly explained the process. I’ve been using these skills for many other design assignments since learning.
