Noir Readings

For this weeks noir readings I read The Postman Always Rings Twice, The Shadow (script for the Death Triangle) and Ernest Hemingway’s The Killers. I love the twists and turns that all of these stories have and the unexpected endings. All of these noir stories have a dark and mysterious angle, which gives it a “thrill” factor. You never now in which direction a story will take you, even if you think you might know. Most noir stories, from what I can tell now, seem to have murder and lust as themes. All of these stories also seem to have an isolation aspect to them as well. In The Postman Always Rings Twice its Cora feeling trapped in a relationship, in The Shadow is the mystery of whose lurking in the house, and in The Killers its the small town and the diner. Overall I’d have to say my favorite reading out of the three was The Shadow. It kept me interested the entire time with trying to figure out who the Shadow was, as well as who the murder was. The Postman Always Rings Twice was entertaining in the respect that there was a lot of plotting and mishap between Cora and Frank with trying to murder her (Cora’s) husband. The horrible events and twists at the end as well that resulted in Cora’s death and Franks imprisonment, took the story in an even further direction and twist then I had thought reading it. Definitely an unexpected ending. The Killers, to me, lacked a little bit of the thrill, but still had that mystery angle of the two murderous men.
