Third Week Summary
This week, all the assignments were related to photos. As I read through the instruction for this week, I learned most significant information, the elements of film noir:
- dramatic use of distinct shadows
- lighting from one side
- off-kilter or unusual camera angle/framing
- the “Venetian blind” effect — using some repeating geometric shadow across a shot
- sense of drama and/or moodiness
- characters captured in a tableau suggesting an intense, fraught moment
- urban nightscapes
- the grittiness of built environment
- a NoirCat
I had time to take photos of these elements, and I really liked it. I had never take photo of given subject. I just took it whenever and whatever I want to take. But this week, I searched for the object that is fit under the categories that are provided.
One of the daily create was making silent video and upload it. It was most hard assignment on this week. I never upload the video on youtube, so I had difficult time to figure out. If you saw my video, it is about 11 seconds. But the original video is about 6 seconds long. As I worked through it, I found tons of equipments(?) I can use to effect the original video.
The assignments from Assignment Bank were pretty easier than I thought. Among the 4 assignments that I completed, I really enjoyed the Historical Selfie and Apophenia. These asked me to be creative but I’m not. Even though I’m not a creative person, I really liked to think in different way and it can be created with my hands and computer. These two involved photoshop and took long time to complete. But it was really enjoyable assignments and did not get stress about it. The problem was that I did not download any photoshop program, so I just used what my computer has, which is drawing panel. Later on, Professor Groom told me to get programs either Photoshop or GIMP. I could not download neither of them because my computer broke and did not turn it on. However, I just got my new computer, so I’m going to download one of the program and start working with it.
Also, I enjoyed the readings that were provided this week. I really like the video called Storytelling & Visual Literacy. I personally like that he compare photography with language. As readers can figure out what author try to say through his/her work, the viewers can know that photographer want to say through his/her work. Whenever I take photos in this week I always remind of this quote, “There are no rules for good photographs, there is only good photographs” by Ansel Adams.
